How do I add swing to drums?
The answer
To add swing to drums, delay every second 16th note of each pair: 50% is straight, 54–62% is the usual hip-hop swing and 66% is a triplet shuffle. Then humanize: lay the snare a few milliseconds behind the beat, loosen the hi-hats and vary velocities so no two hits are the same. In a DAW use the swing or groove control (Ableton’s groove pool, FL Studio’s swing knob, Logic’s quantize swing). The free SongUp AI Drum Swing & Humanizer below shows each setting in milliseconds, plays it live, and exports MIDI or a drum loop, or swings your own MIDI file.

| Swing | 50% (straight) to 75%, shown in milliseconds at your tempo |

Feel
The classic head-nod swing of 90s hip-hop drum machines.
Swing your own MIDI file
Export a drum or hi-hat pattern from your DAW as MIDI, choose it here, and get it back with the feel above: off-beat 16ths moved late, the snare laid back, the hats loosened and the velocities varied.

Step by step
- 1
Start a pattern
Pick boom-bap, lo-fi, trap or neo-soul, or program the 16-step grid. Tap once for a soft hit, twice for an accent.
- 2
Set the swing
Try 54% for a light bounce, 62% for classic hip-hop swing or 66% for a shuffle. The slider shows how late that is at your tempo.
- 3
Humanize it
Add a lazy snare, loose hats, human timing and velocity variation, or choose the Lazy, behind the beat preset.
- 4
Export
Download a 4-bar MIDI file or an audio loop, or choose your own MIDI file and download it swung.
Tips
- Swing the hats and leave the kick on the grid: the groove feels loose but still hits.
- Press New human take for a different random feel with the same settings.
- Lo-fi drums? Run the loop through the free Lo-Fi Effect.

Questions
What swing is used in hip-hop?
Most boom-bap and lo-fi sits between about 54% and 62% on 16th notes. Higher than 66% starts to sound like a shuffle.
Should I swing 8th or 16th notes?
For hip-hop, lo-fi and R&B at 70–100 BPM, swing the 16ths. At very fast tempos or in shuffles, 8th-note swing is more common.
