About the LUFS Loudness Meter for Spotify & YouTube

Completely free: free account, no credits, no limit. It runs in your browser, so your audio stays on your device.

The LUFS Loudness Meter measures integrated loudness the standard way (ITU-R BS.1770 / EBU R128: K-weighting, 400 ms blocks, absolute and relative gates), plus the loudest 3-second stretch and the sample peak.

It then shows what streaming services will do: Spotify, YouTube and Tidal play music at about −14 LUFS by default and Apple Music at about −16, turning louder songs down. One click makes a −14 LUFS version with a limiter at −1.5 dB.

The peak shown is the sample peak, not the oversampled true peak, so leave about 1 dB of headroom.

What you can use it for

  • ✓Check a master before uploading to Spotify or a distributor
  • ✓Compare your mix with a reference track
  • ✓Bring a quiet podcast or video soundtrack up to a standard level

Step-by-step guide: How Loud Should a Song Be for Spotify? (LUFS Explained)

Frequently asked questions

How loud should my song be for Spotify?

+

Spotify normalises to about −14 LUFS integrated, so a master around −14 to −9 LUFS with peaks below −1 dBFS plays well. Louder masters are simply turned down.

What is LUFS?

+

Loudness Units relative to Full Scale: a measure of how loud audio sounds to people, not just its peak level. Streaming services use it to play every song at a similar volume.

Is the result the same as in my DAW?

+

Integrated LUFS follows the same standard, so it should agree within a few tenths. The peak here is the sample peak, which can read slightly lower than a true-peak meter.

Is it really free?

+

Yes. It is completely free, with a free account: no limit and no watermark. It runs in your browser, so your audio stays on your device.
