About the AI Chord Finder: Chords, Key & BPM of Any Song
By Ismail Farooq, founder of SongUp AI · Updated 3 November 2026
Completely free: free account, no card needed, no credits, no limit. It runs in your browser, so your audio stays on your device.
To find the chords of a song, upload the audio file here (MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC, up to 50 MB). The free AI Chord Finder returns the chord progression with a timestamp for every change, plus the song’s key and tempo (BPM), and you can copy the whole progression as text. It needs only a free account, and the song is analysed in your browser, so it is never uploaded.
Chords are laid out on a colour-coded timeline with confidence scores. The analysis recognises 168 chords: 14 chord types (major, minor, 7, maj7, m7, 6, m6, add9, sus2, sus4, dim, dim7, m7b5 and augmented) on each of the 12 root notes. The key is given as major or minor, and the tempo is read between 40 and 200 BPM.
Accuracy is highest on recordings with clear harmony such as piano, guitar or band arrangements. Drum-heavy tracks and dense electronic productions are harder to read.
Because it is a chord finder from audio, it works on recordings no chord site lists: your own demo, a band rehearsal, a voice memo of a guitar idea or an MP3 from a small artist. It acts as a song to chords converter: Copy Chords gives you one line for each change, with the time and the chord, ready to paste into a note and play along.
What you can use it for
- ✓Work out the chords of a song to learn it on guitar or piano
- ✓Find the key and BPM before remixing or DJing a track
- ✓Analyse the progression of a reference song for songwriting
- ✓Get the chords of your own demo or rehearsal recording
Common questions, answered
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the chords of a song?
+
Either look them up or let AI work them out from the audio. For popular songs, chord sites such as Ultimate Guitar have chord sheets written by players, and Chordify works from a YouTube link. For any recording, upload it here: the AI Chord Finder shows every chord on a timeline with the key and BPM, and you can copy the progression as text. It is free with a free account, and the song stays on your device.
How do I find the chords of a song by ear?
+
Find the key first: hum the note the song feels like it ends on and match it on your instrument. Then try the common chords of that key. In C major they are C, F, G and A minor, the I, IV, V and vi chords most pop songs use. Play along with the bass line, because the bass note is usually the root of the chord. Check your guess against the detected chords here.
How accurate is the chord detection?
+
It is reliable for common progressions in pop, rock, folk and jazz with clear harmonic instruments. Complex voicings or busy mixes can be simplified or misread, so check the confidence score.
Can it detect the key and tempo too?
+
Yes, the result includes the estimated BPM and key alongside the chords.
How can I improve accuracy?
+
Use the Stem Separator to remove drums and vocals first, then analyse the remaining instrument stem.
What files can I use?
+
MP3, WAV, M4A and FLAC up to 50 MB.
What is the best free AI chord finder?
+
For a song you have as a file, this one: it gives chords with timestamps, the key and the BPM for free, with no upload, because it runs in your browser. Chordify is the better choice when you only have a link to the song or want a large library of songs that are already analysed, and the Chord ai app suits playing along on a phone (its free version recognises basic chords; more precise detection is in its paid version).
Can it find the chords from a YouTube or Spotify link?
+
No. It works from an audio file on your device (MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC). That is also why your song is never uploaded anywhere.
Can I transpose the chords or use a capo?
+
The chord list is shown in the song’s original key and is not transposed for you. To play the song in another key, move each chord by the same number of semitones, or change the key of the audio itself with the free Pitch & Key Changer and analyse it again.
Does it work on a phone?
+
Yes, in a modern phone browser. Longer songs take longer to analyse on a phone than on a computer.
How do I find chords from audio online for free?
+
Open this page, sign in with a free account, drop in the audio file and press Analyze Chords. The chord finder lists every chord with its time, plus the key and BPM. There is no credit charge or limit, and the file stays on your device.
Can it convert an MP3 or a song to chords?
+
Yes. Any MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC up to 50 MB works, whether it is a released song or your own recording. You get a timed chord list that you can copy as text. It gives chord names, not sheet music or guitar tab.
How does the AI chord detector work?
+
It measures how strongly each of the 12 notes sounds in each moment of the song, then matches that pattern against 168 chord shapes and picks the closest one. The result shows a confidence score for each chord, so you can see which ones to check by ear. All of this runs in your browser.
Do I need an account?
+
Only a free one. It is completely free with a free account: no credits and no limit. It runs in your browser, so your audio never leaves your device.
