Common questions, answered
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a mashup of two songs for free?
+
Upload one song under Vocals from and another under Beat from. The Mashup Maker separates the voice from the music in both songs in your browser, moves the vocals to the beat’s tempo and key, lines them up on the drums and mixes them with the voice on top. Adjust the levels, key or timing if you like, then download the mashup as MP3 or WAV. It is free with a free account, with no watermark and no limit.
What makes two songs mash up well?
+
Close tempos (within about 10–15 BPM), the same or a related key (neighbours on the Camelot wheel), and one song with a strong lead vocal over another with a strong beat. Classic mashups put an acapella over an instrumental. The tool matches tempo and key for you, so a bigger gap still works, but the vocal sounds most natural when the move is small.
Does it match the BPM and key automatically?
+
Yes. It finds both songs’ tempo and key, stretches and shifts the vocals to fit the beat, and lines them up on the drums. You can still move the key or timing by hand.
How do I put the vocals from one song over another beat?
+
Without a DAW: upload the song whose singer you want under Vocals from and the song whose music you want under Beat from. The Mashup Maker splits both songs into stems in your browser, keeps only the vocals of the first and the instrumental of the second, stretches and shifts the vocals to the beat’s tempo and key, lines them up on the drums and mixes them with the voice on top. You then change the voice and beat levels and download MP3 or WAV. In a DAW you would do the same four steps by hand: get the acapella, match the BPM, match the key, line up the first phrase on a downbeat.
How do I match the key and tempo of two songs for a mashup?
+
The Mashup Maker does it for you. It finds both songs’ BPM and key. If the tempos are within about 8% of each other, only the vocals are stretched; if the gap is bigger, both songs move halfway so neither is stretched far. The vocals are moved into the beat’s key, or its relative major or minor, by up to 6 semitones, choosing the shift where the sung notes agree best with the beat’s chords. If a line still sounds off, Voice key moves the voice up to 4 semitones either way from the automatic match, and Voice timing shifts it up to 8 beats earlier or later.
Which song should be which?
+
Vocals from: a song with a clear lead singer. Beat from: the song whose music you want. The swap button flips them.
Is it free?
+
Yes, completely free with a free account: no watermark and no limit on mashups or MP3 and WAV downloads. Phones and tablets need any paid plan, because the songs are split on our servers there.
Can I publish mashups of commercial songs?
+
You need permission from the rights holders to publish or monetise mashups of songs you do not own.
Which files and how long?
+
Audio files you have, such as MP3, WAV or M4A, not YouTube or Spotify links. The first 3 minutes 20 seconds of each song are used.
Does it work on a phone?
+
Yes, in a modern phone browser, on any paid plan. Phones and tablets split both songs on our servers, because the AI model needs more memory than they have, and use the first minute of each song. The run carries on if the screen locks or the page reloads. On a computer it is free with a free account: the first run downloads a 172 MB AI model once, then everything runs in your browser.
How do I make a mashup on an iPhone for free?
+
This tool works on an iPhone in Safari or Chrome, but it needs any paid plan there. For a free mashup on an iPhone, use the free BandLab or GarageBand app and line the two songs up by hand, or open this page on a computer, where it is free with a free account and does the tempo and key matching for you. The best free mashup makers list compares the phone options.
Can I mash up two songs from YouTube or Spotify links?
+
Not with links: it works on audio files you have (MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC). Downloading audio from YouTube or Spotify is against their terms. RaveDJ is the option that starts from links, with little control over the edit.
Does it work without uploading my songs?
+
Yes, on a computer. Both songs are split and mixed inside your browser, so the audio never leaves your device. Phones, tablets and computers with 4 GB of memory or less send the songs to our servers to be split.
What is the best free mashup maker?

Live, beat-matched DJ mixing: Mixxx (free, open source). Full manual control over tempo, pitch and cuts: Audacity.
