How it works

1

Upload Song

Pick any track. The AI model will download to your browser once and cache for future use.

2

Extract Stems

The neural network splits the song into 4 stems (vocals, drums, bass, other) or 6 stems, which adds guitar and piano.

3

Listen & Download

Mute/Solo individual stems using the mixer, then export them all as high-quality WAV files.

Pro tipExtracted a cool drum beat or vocal line? Drop the downloaded stem straight into the Sampling Tool to chop it up, alter its pitch, and loop it.

About the AI Stem Separator

By Ismail Farooq, founder of SongUp AI · Facts checked 27 October 2026

Free to use: no credits are needed and there is no limit, but you need any paid SongUp AI subscription plan to use it. It runs in your browser, so your audio stays on your device.

The SongUp AI Stem Separator splits a finished song into its individual parts. Choose 4-stem mode to get vocals, drums, bass and “other”, or 6-stem mode to also pull out guitar and piano. Separation is done by the HTDemucs neural network, one of the most widely used open models for music source separation.

The model runs inside your browser rather than on a server, so your audio is never uploaded. The first run downloads the model once (about 172 MB for 4 stems, 114 MB for 6 stems) and caches it, so later runs start immediately. Each stem can be soloed, muted and exported as a WAV file.

Separation quality depends on the source: well-produced tracks with clearly defined instruments give the cleanest stems, while dense or heavily distorted mixes can leave some bleed between parts.

What you can use it for

  • ✓Make an instrumental or acapella of a song for practice or covers
  • ✓Isolate a drum break or bassline to study or sample it
  • ✓Pull stems from a demo so you can remix or re-arrange it in your DAW
  • ✓Mute your own instrument and play along with the rest of the band

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 4-stem and 6-stem mode?

+

4-stem mode separates vocals, drums, bass and everything else. 6-stem mode additionally separates guitar and piano, which is useful for rock, pop and singer-songwriter material.

Which audio formats can I upload?

+

MP3, WAV, M4A and FLAC files up to 50 MB. Higher-quality sources such as WAV or 320 kbps MP3 give cleaner stems.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

+

On most computers, no: the AI model is downloaded to your browser and all separation happens on your device. Phones and low-memory computers send the song to our servers to be split instead, up to 10 minutes per song and 10 songs a day.

Why is the first separation slower?

+

The first run downloads the AI model. It is cached afterwards, so the next songs only take the processing time.

How do I isolate the drums from a song?

+

Upload the song above in 4-stem mode and start the separation. When it finishes, turn off every stem except Drums and press Download Mix for a WAV of the drums alone, or Export ZIP for every stem as its own WAV. The drums come out as one track: kick, snare and cymbals are not split from each other.

How do I isolate the bass from a song?

+

Use 4-stem mode, turn off every stem except Bass and press Download Mix for a WAV of the bass alone. To play along instead, use the Mute Bass preset, which keeps every other stem playing.

Can I get just the guitar or piano?

+

Yes, in 6-stem mode, which adds guitar and piano stems. Other instruments such as strings or synths stay together in the “other” stem.

Is it free? Do I need a plan?

+

It is free to use: no credits are needed and there is no limit on songs. You need any paid SongUp AI subscription plan to run it, and every plan unlocks it. It runs in your browser, so your audio never leaves your device. For vocals only, the Acapella Extractor is completely free with a free account.
