How do I make vocal chops?
The answer
To make vocal chops, take a dry acapella, cut it into short pieces at the start of each sound, put the pieces on pads or keys, and play them in a new rhythm or melody, usually pitched. The free SongUp AI Vocal Chop Maker below does this in your browser: choose the vocal, press Chop it, play the 16 pads with your keyboard or a MIDI keyboard (or one chop on every note in Keys mode), then record a take or download the chops. In a DAW, a slicing sampler such as Ableton’s Simpler or FL Studio’s Slicex does the same.

Step by step
- 1
Get a dry vocal
Your own recording or a licensed acapella. Only have the full song? Pull the vocal out with the Acapella Extractor.
- 2
Chop it
Choose the vocal and press Chop it. Cuts go where each sound starts; raise Sensitivity for more chops, or cut into equal slices.
- 3
Play it
Pads mode: one chop per pad (keys 1–4, Q–R, A–F, Z–V). Keys mode: one chop on every note, like a sampler. A MIDI keyboard works too.
- 4
Record and download
Press Record a take, play, stop, then download the take, a single chop or all chops as a ZIP.
Tips
- Short vowel sounds (“ah”, “oh”, “ey”) make the most musical chops.
- Keep “One chop at a time” on for the tight, stuttering chop sound.
- Add a little reverb and auto-tune to chops for a modern pop sound.

Questions
Do I need a MIDI keyboard?
No. The computer keyboard and the on-screen pads work. A MIDI keyboard adds velocity and is easier for melodies.
Can I use vocal chops from a famous song?
Only with permission. Sampling a recording without clearance can lead to takedowns. Use your own vocals, a royalty-free acapella, or make an original song with AI and chop that.
Is it free?
Yes. It is completely free, with a free account: no limit and no watermark. It runs in your browser, so your audio stays on your device.
