Lines explained

“Mountaineers are always free, that's what the mountains say”

This line refers to the state motto of West Virginia, 'Montani Semper Liberi,' which means 'Mountaineers Are Always Free.' It's a core part of the state's identity.

“Pepperoni rolls and ramps in spring, the Greenbrier rolling by”

Pepperoni rolls are a popular regional snack in West Virginia, and ramps are a type of wild onion harvested in the spring, both iconic local foods. The Greenbrier is a historic luxury resort in the state.

“Born in a war to stay with the Union, almost heaven, they say”

West Virginia was formed during the American Civil War when it seceded from Virginia to remain with the Union. The phrase 'almost heaven' is a direct reference to John Denver's famous song 'Take Me Home, Country Roads,' which is strongly associated with West Virginia.
