Completely free: use it right away with no sign-up, no card, no credits and no limit. A free account is asked only when you download a file. It runs in your browser, so your audio stays on your device.
The online Tone Generator plays a pure tone at any frequency from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Type the frequency, drag the slider (it moves on a log scale, so low notes aren’t squeezed) or halve and double it an octave at a time. Choose a sine, square, triangle or sawtooth wave.
Play it in both ears, the left only or the right only to test headphones and speakers, sweep from 20 Hz to 20 kHz in 10 to 60 seconds to check your speakers or hearing range, or pick a preset (440 Hz A4, 432, 528, 60 Hz hum, 1 kHz test tone, 10 kHz, 15 kHz, 17.4 kHz) or any musical note from C2 to C7.
Download the tone as a WAV file, 1 to 60 seconds long (the download asks for the free account). The sound is made in your browser. Start at a low volume, especially with headphones.

Frequently asked questions
How do I play a specific frequency?
+
Type the frequency in hertz in the big box (or drag the slider) and press Play tone. You can change the frequency, waveform, volume and ear while it plays.
What frequencies can humans hear?
+
About 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz for young people. The top end falls with age: many adults stop hearing around 15,000 to 17,000 Hz. Use the sweep or the 15 kHz and 17.4 kHz presets to check yours, at a low volume.
Why can’t I hear low frequencies?
+
Phone and laptop speakers play little below about 100 Hz. Use headphones or a subwoofer for low tones.
What is the difference between sine, square, triangle and sawtooth?
+
A sine wave is one pure frequency. Triangle adds soft odd harmonics, square adds strong odd harmonics (hollow and buzzy) and sawtooth adds all harmonics (bright and brassy).
Can I test left and right speakers?
+
Yes. Choose Left only or Right only; the tone should come from that side.
Can I download the tone?
+
Yes, as a WAV file from 1 to 60 seconds, with the frequency, waveform, volume and ear you set. The download asks for a free account.
Can I share a frequency?
+
Add ?hz= to the address, for example /tools/tone-generator?hz=528, and the page opens on that frequency.
Is it safe?
+
Start quiet and turn up slowly. Loud high tones, especially in headphones, can be uncomfortable or harm hearing, and tones near 15 to 20 kHz can annoy pets.
Is it really free?
+
Yes. It is completely free: use it right away with no sign-up, no limit and no watermark. A free account is asked only when you download a file. It runs in your browser, so your audio stays on your device.
