A custom song with someone's name in it has become one of the most-searched personal gifts in the US and UK. Prices run from $20 to more than $400, and delivery from a few minutes to a few weeks. This guide compares the three ways to get one, and what you actually get at each price.

We build SongUp AI, which is one of the options below. We have tried to give the other two a fair hearing, because for some gifts they are the better choice.

In short

  • Songwriting services such as Songfinch: about $199 for a song written and sung by a real artist, delivered in about a week. Faster delivery costs extra.
  • Freelance singers on Fiverr and similar sites: from about $20 for a simple vocal to $200–$400 for the most-reviewed songwriters. Quality and turnaround vary by seller.
  • AI song makers such as SongUp AI: $2.99 for one song, written and sung from your story in minutes, with their name in the chorus.
  • Pick a human songwriter if you have a week or more and the budget. Pick AI if the occasion is close or you want to try several versions.

Prices were checked in October 2026 from public listings and support pages. Services change their prices, so check before you order.

Option 1: a songwriting service

Services such as Songfinch match you with a professional artist who writes and records a song from a questionnaire you fill in. Songfinch has long listed its standard song at about $199, delivered in about a week, with faster delivery costing more.

What you get: a real singer, a real performance and a story you can tell ("a musician wrote this for you"). Personal-use licensing is typical, which is fine for a gift.

Watch out for: the deadline. If the birthday is on Saturday and it's Thursday, you may already be too late, or paying a rush fee.

Option 2: a freelance singer

Marketplaces such as Fiverr have hundreds of singers offering gift songs. At the low end, about $20 often buys a vocal over a stock backing track. The best-reviewed songwriters charge $200–$400 for a fully written, arranged and mixed song.

What you get: a wide choice of voices and genres, and often the chance to talk to the singer directly.

Watch out for: what the base price includes. Some listings cover lyrics only, or a two-minute vocal with harmonies charged extra. Read reviews, check sample songs and confirm the delivery date before paying.

Option 3: an AI song maker

AI song makers write lyrics from what you tell them and sing them over a full arrangement. On SongUp AI you describe the person, the occasion and the style, for example "warm country love song for my wife Rachel, lyrics about dancing in the kitchen on Sunday mornings", and the song is ready in a few minutes.

What you get: speed, a very low price and the freedom to try another version. One song is $2.99, paid once. It comes as a gift page that plays with your message and a photo, plus the MP3 to keep.

Watch out for: names and details. AI sings what it is given, so spell unusual names the way they sound and be specific. Vague prompts make vague songs. Our guide to what to write in a personalized song has examples.

Which should you choose?

  • The occasion is in the next few days: AI. Nothing else is reliably ready in time.
  • You want a real musician and have a week: a songwriting service or a well-reviewed freelancer.
  • You are not sure what style they would like: AI, because you can make three versions and keep the best.
  • It's a once-in-a-lifetime moment (a wedding first dance, a big anniversary): consider a human songwriter, or make an AI version first to find the style and words you want, then brief a musician with it.
  • The budget is tight: AI or a low-cost freelancer.
