About the Mic Test Online: Check Your Microphone

By Ismail Farooq, founder of SongUp AI · Facts checked 27 October 2026

Completely free: use it right away with no sign-up, no card, no credits and no limit. A free account is asked only when you download a file. It runs in your browser, so your audio stays on your device.

The online Mic Test shows whether your microphone works in a second. Press Start mic test, allow the microphone and speak: you see the live waveform and the level in dB, and a plain answer: working, too quiet, too loud (clipping) or silent.

Pick another microphone from the list if your computer has more than one (a headset, a webcam, a USB mic), and see its settings: sample rate, channels, echo cancellation, noise suppression and auto gain. Turn on the call-style processing to hear what Zoom, Teams or Discord would send.

Record a 5-second test and play it back to hear exactly how you sound. The sound is analysed on your device; the test recording stays in the tab and is never uploaded.

What you can use it for

  • ✓Check your mic before a Zoom, Teams, Meet or Discord call
  • ✓Find out why people can’t hear you
  • ✓Pick the right microphone when you have several
  • ✓Set your level before recording vocals or a podcast

Frequently asked questions

How do I test my microphone online?

+

Press Start mic test and allow the microphone when the browser asks. Speak or clap: if the waveform moves and the level meter rises, your microphone works. Record a 5-second test to hear yourself back.

Why is my microphone not working?

+

The usual causes: the browser has no permission (click the lock or camera icon in the address bar and allow the microphone), the mic is muted by a button or switch on the headset or laptop, the wrong microphone is chosen (pick another in the list), or another app such as Zoom or Teams is holding it.

Why does it say nothing is heard?

+

After 4 seconds of silence the test tells you. Check the mute button or switch, raise the input volume in your system sound settings, or choose another microphone in the list.

What level should my microphone be?

+

Speaking normally, the peaks should sit between about −20 and −6 dB. Above −1 dB the sound clips (the meter turns red): move back or lower the input volume. Below −30 dB it is too quiet.

Can I hear myself back?

+

Yes. Press Record a 5-second test, speak, and it plays back when it ends. The recording stays in the page and is never uploaded.

Does the mic test work on a phone?

+

Yes, in Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone. Allow microphone access when asked.

Is my sound recorded or sent anywhere?

+

No. The waveform and level are worked out in your browser, and the 5-second test recording is kept only in the open tab.

Is it free?

+

Yes, completely free, with no sign-up and no limit.
