About the Vocal Range Test: Find Your Voice Type

By Ismail Farooq, founder of SongUp AI · Facts checked 27 October 2026

Completely free: use it right away with no sign-up, no card, no credits and no limit. A free account is asked only when you download a file. It runs in your browser, so your audio stays on your device.

The Vocal Range Test listens while you sing and keeps the lowest and highest notes you hold. Sing “ahh” on your lowest comfortable note, then slide up slowly to your highest. A note counts once you hold it for about a third of a second, so short cracks and slides don’t.

Your range is shown on a piano keyboard from C2 to E6, as note names (middle C is C4), semitones and octaves, with the closest of six voice types: bass, baritone, tenor, alto, mezzo-soprano and soprano.

Pitch is detected on your device. Nothing is recorded or uploaded.

What you can use it for

  • ✓Find out if you’re a tenor, baritone, alto or soprano
  • ✓Pick songs and keys that suit your voice
  • ✓Track your range as you train
  • ✓Tell a choir director or teacher your range

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my vocal range?

+

Press Start the test and allow the microphone. Sing “ahh” on your lowest comfortable note and hold it for a second, then slide up slowly and hold your highest comfortable note. The test keeps the lowest and highest notes you held.

What voice type am I?

+

The test compares your range with typical ranges: bass about E2–E4, baritone A2–A4, tenor C3–C5, alto F3–F5, mezzo-soprano A3–A5 and soprano C4–C6, and names the closest. Voice type also depends on tone and where your voice feels easy, so treat it as a guide.

What is a good vocal range?

+

Most untrained singers have about 1.5 to 2 octaves. Trained singers often reach 2 to 3 octaves. Range grows with practice; a comfortable, strong range matters more than the extremes.

Should I count my falsetto?

+

Sing your comfortable notes for your everyday range. You can run it again with falsetto or head voice to see your full range; don’t strain or shout.

Why did it pick up the wrong note?

+

Background noise, music or another voice can count as notes. Sing in a quiet room, close to the microphone, and press Start over to try again.

Is my singing recorded?

+

No. The pitch is worked out live in your browser and nothing is saved or sent.

Is it free?

+

Yes, completely free, with no sign-up and no limit.
