Classic layout: the keys 1–0, Q–P, A–L and Z–M play the white keys from C2 to C7, Shift plays the black key above. It matches virtual piano sheets. Hold Space for the sustain pedal. On a phone, play with several fingers and slide across the keys; a key sounds louder the lower you press it.

The sheet shows the keys of the classic layout (capital letters and symbols mean Shift). All the songs here are in the public domain.

About the Virtual Piano: Play Piano Online with Your Keyboard

Completely free: free account, no credits, no limit. It runs in your browser, so your audio stays on your device.

The SongUp AI Virtual Piano is a recorded concert grand piano (the Salamander Grand, sampled note by note) with 61 keys from C2 to C7. Play it with the computer keyboard, the mouse, a touchscreen with several fingers, or a USB or Bluetooth MIDI keyboard with velocity and a real sustain pedal. Strike louder by pressing lower on a key, hold Space for the sustain pedal, and add room reverb.

Two keyboard layouts: Classic, where the keys 1–0, Q–P, A–L and Z–M play the white keys and Shift plays the black ones, exactly like virtual piano letter sheets, and Two rows (A to ;) like music software. As you play, the piano names the chord you are holding, inversions included, so it doubles as a chord finder. You can also switch to acoustic or electric guitar, violin, cello, flute or saxophone.

Press Record to capture what you play, play it back, and download it as a WAV or MP3 with the instrument and reverb you chose, or as a MIDI file for your DAW or notation app. To learn, pick one of eleven public-domain songs (Für Elise, Ode to Joy, Canon in D, Happy Birthday, Jingle Bells and more), press Play along, and the keyboard lights the next key and waits for you.

What you can use it for

  • ✓Play piano without owning one
  • ✓Practise with a MIDI keyboard and sustain pedal
  • ✓Learn Für Elise or Ode to Joy note by note
  • ✓Find the name of a chord you are playing
  • ✓Record a melody idea and download it as MIDI
  • ✓Play virtual piano sheets with letter notation

Frequently asked questions

How do I play piano with my computer keyboard?

+

In the Classic layout the number row and the letter rows play the white keys from left to right: 1 is C2, t is middle C (C4), m is C7. Hold Shift for the black key above, so T is C#4. Hold Space for the sustain pedal.

Can I use virtual piano sheets?

+

Yes. The Classic layout matches the letter notation used by virtual piano sheets: lowercase letters and numbers are white keys, capital letters and symbols (! @ $ % ^ *) are black keys played with Shift.

Does it work with a MIDI keyboard?

+

Yes, in Chrome and Edge on computers and Android: press Connect a MIDI keyboard. Velocity and the sustain pedal (CC 64) work.

Is it a real piano sound?

+

Yes. Every note is a recording of a Yamaha C5 grand piano (Salamander Grand Piano), not a synthesizer. Lower keys are recorded every few notes and gently re-tuned between them.

Can I record what I play?

+

Yes. Press Record, play, press Stop. Play it back, or download it as WAV, MP3 or MIDI (downloads need a free account).

Which songs can I learn?

+

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Ode to Joy, Happy Birthday, Für Elise, Jingle Bells, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Canon in D, Amazing Grace, Silent Night, When the Saints Go Marching In and Brahms’ Lullaby. Listen plays it; Play along lights each next key and waits for you.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

+

Yes. Play with several fingers, slide across keys for a glissando, and use the arrows to move along the keyboard.

Is it free?

+

Yes. Playing, recording and lessons are free for everyone; downloading a recording needs a free account.
