In Your name, God of Heaven

حرف القاف برقه لماء

Harf al-qaf biriqih li-ma'

The letter Qaf with its softness to water

وتهمهم ومزنه هماء

Wa tuhmihim wa muznih hama'

And it murmurs, and its rain pours down

وسقاني وجع وانكسار

Wa saqani waja' wa inkisar

And it watered me with pain and brokenness

ببدأ قصتي والدموع

B-abda' qissati wal-dumoo'

I begin my story with tears

تطفي في حشايا شموع

Tutfee fi hashaya shomoo'

Extinguishing candles within my core

على اللي ما نوى بالرجوع

Ala alladhi ma nawa bil-rujoo'

For the one who had no intention of returning

وشل الروح يوم استدار

Wa shalla al-rooh yawm istadar

And took the soul when he turned away

سبع سنين والبيت ضاق

Sab'a sineen wal-bayt dhaq

Seven years and the house felt small

والذكرى تشد الوثاق

Wal-dhikra tashudd al-wathaq

And memories tighten the bond

يا مرّة طعوم الفراق

Ya marra tu'oom al-firaq

Oh, how bitter are the tastes of separation

تجرعنا كؤوس المرار

Tajarrana ku'oos al-marar

We drank cups of bitterness

يوم الأحد والزوال

Yawm al-ahad wal-zawal

Sunday, at noon

يوم شل عزي وجال

Yawm shalla 'izzi wa jal

The day he took my pride and wandered

غاب اللي يحل الثقال

Ghab alladhi yahull al-thiqal

The one who solves heavy burdens is gone

محمد والخبر كان نار

Muhammad wal-khabar kan nar

Muhammad, and the news was like fire

بغروب طوى فرحتي

Bi-ghuroob tawa farhati

At sunset, my joy was folded away

سمعت الآه والأنين

Sami'tu al-ah wal-aneen

I heard the sighs and moans

رحل والدي واليقين

Rahala walidi wal-yaqeen

My father departed, and certainty

هدّ القلب والاصطبار

Hadda al-qalb wal-istibar

Broke the heart and patience

تركنّا بدار الكرام

Tarakna bi-dar al-karam

He left us in the house of honor

على العز والاحترام

Ala al-'izz wal-ihtiram

With dignity and respect

وربّى صقور الجسام

Wa rabba suqoor al-jisam

And raised strong falcons

على نهجه والمسار

Ala nahjih wal-masar

On his path and course

أخوي الكبير الموفق

Akhooy al-kabeer al-muwaffaq

My elder brother, the successful one

بصمته وعزمه تفوق

Bi-samtihi wa 'azmihi tafawoq

With his steadfastness and determination, he excelled

عن الود ما يوم يفرق

An al-wudd ma yawm yufarriq

From affection, he never deviates

وهو للقبيلة منار

Wa huwa lil-qabeela manar

And he is a beacon for the tribe

وقف وقفة الأب فينا

Waqafa waqfat al-ab feena

He stood like a father among us

وعزز بصدقه حدينا

Wa 'azzaz bi-sidqih hadina

And strengthened our boundaries with his honesty

بحر الكرم في يدينا

Bahr al-karam fi yadeena

The sea of generosity in our hands

إذا الوقت مال وجار

Idha al-waqt mal wa jar

If time turns unfair and unjust

ثبت مثل صم الرواسي

Thabata mithl summ al-rawasi

He stood firm like solid anchors

شديد القوى والمراسي

Shadeed al-quwa wal-marasi

Strong in power and steadfast

يرد الوجع والمآسي

Yarudd al-waja' wal-ma'asi

He repels pain and tragedies

ويحمي بصدقه الجوار

Wa yahmi bi-sidqih al-jiwar

And protects neighbors with his honesty

وأمي سحابة حنان

Wa ummi sahabat hanan

And my mother, a cloud of tenderness

بها قد وجدنا الأمان

Biha qad wajadna al-aman

In her, we found safety

عسى أجرها في ضمان

Asa ajraha fi dhaman

May her reward be guaranteed

لها في جنان الأبرار

Laha fi jinan al-abrar

For her in the gardens of the righteous

يا والدي لو رحت لبعيد

Ya walidi law ruht li-ba'eed

Oh my father, even if you went far away

حبك في الحنايا يزيد

Hubbuk fi al-hanaya yazeed

Your love in my heart increases

بأصبر والصبر فيني وريد

B-asbir wal-sabr feeni wareed

I will be patient, and patience is a vein in me

رغم الوجع والانكسار

Raghm al-waja' wal-inkisar

Despite the pain and brokenness

وقبل الختام والوداع

Wa qabl al-khitam wal-wada'

And before the end and farewell

لأهل الوفاء والطباع

Li-ahl al-wafa' wal-tiba'

To the people of loyalty and good character

من وقفوا بعزم وشجاع

Man waqafu bi-'azm wa shuja'

Who stood with determination and courage

لهم شكري والوقار

Lahum shukri wal-waqar

To them my thanks and respect

وأختم بذكر الرسول

Wa akhtim bi-dhikr al-rasool

And I conclude by mentioning the Messenger

المختار نور العقول

Al-mukhtar noor al-'uqool

The chosen one, light of minds

صليت ما تحن السيول

Sallayt ma tahinn al-suyool

May prayers be upon him as long as torrents yearn

في الصحراء وفي البادية

Fi al-sahra' wa fi al-badiya

In the desert and in the wilderness
