ہماری مُحَبَّت بے آواز تھی

Hamārī muḥabbat be āvāz thī

Our love was voiceless

ایک اَدھوری، خاموش اور رُوح کو چھو لینے والی غزل

Ek adhūrī, khāmosh aur rūḥ ko chhū lene vālī ghazal

An incomplete, silent, and soul-stirring ghazal

ہماری آنکھ میں اِک خواب تھا، اظہار نہ تھا

Hamārī āñkh meñ ik khvāb thā, izhār na thā

There was a dream in our eyes, but no expression

وہ میرے پاس تو تھا، مگر میرا یار نہ تھا

Vo mere pās to thā, magar merā yār na thā

He was with me, but he wasn't my beloved

نگاہوں نے کئی بار کہا حالِ دِل اپنا

Nigāhoñ ne kaī bār kahā ḥāl-e-dil apnā

Our gazes spoke the state of our hearts many times

لبوں پہ پھر بھی کبھی حَرْفِ اِقرار نہ تھا

Laboñ pe phir bhī kabhī ḥarf-e-iqrār na thā

Yet, there was never a word of confession on our lips

وہ سامنے تھا تو دُنیا ٹھہر سی جاتی تھی

Vo sāmne thā to duniyā ṭhahar sī jātī thī

When he was in front, the world seemed to stop

مگر نصیب میں ملنے کا اِختیار نہ تھا

Magar naṣīb meñ milne kā ikhtiyār na thā

But it wasn't in our destiny to meet (as lovers)

ہم ایک دُوسرے کو جانتے تھے خاموشی میں

Ham ek dūsre ko jānte the khāmoshī meñ

We knew each other in silence

کسی کے پاس بھی کہنے کو اِظہار نہ تھا

Kisī ke pās bhī kahne ko izhār na thā

Neither of us had an expression to speak

وہ جب بھی سامنے آتا، نظر جھکا لیتا

Vo jab bhī sāmne ātā, nazar jhukā letā

Whenever he came in front, he would lower his gaze

مری نگاہ میں اُس کے سوا کوئی نہ تھا

Mirī nigāh meñ us ke sivā koī na thā

In my sight, there was no one but him

کئی خَزَانے چُھپے تھے ہماری خاموشی میں

Kaī khazāne chhūpe the hamārī khāmoshī meñ

Many treasures were hidden in our silence

مگر لبوں پہ محبّت کا کوئی نام نہ تھا

Magar laboñ pe muḥabbat kā koī nām na thā

But there was no name of love on our lips

وہ ایک شخص جو آنکھوں میں گھر بناتا تھا

Vo ek shakhṣ jo ānkhoñ meñ ghar banātā thā

That one person who made a home in my eyes

اُسی کے شہر میں میرا کوئی مَقام نہ تھا

Usī ke shahar meñ merā koī maqām na thā

In his very city, I had no place

میں اُس کے سامنے بیٹھا رہا کئی لمحے

Maiñ us ke sāmne baiṭhā rahā kaī lamhe

I sat before him for many moments

وہ جانتا تھا سبھی کچھ، مگر سوال نہ تھا

Vo jāntā thā sabhī kuchh, magar savāl na thā

He knew everything, but there was no question

کبھی جو ہاتھ سے ہاتھ اتفاقاً چھو جاتا

Kabhī jo hāth se hāth ittifāqan chhū jātā

If ever a hand accidentally touched another

تمام عُمْر کا وہ لمس بھلایا نہ گیا

Tamām umr kā vo lams bhulāyā na gayā

That touch of a lifetime could not be forgotten

ہماری رُوح میں اِک دُوسرے کا گھر تھا مگر

Hamārī rūḥ meñ ik dūsre kā ghar thā magar

In our souls, there was a home for each other, but

ہمارے نام پہ کوئی بھی در کھلا نہ تھا

Hamāre nām pe koī bhī dar khulā na thā

No door opened in our name

وہ میرے درد کو آنکھوں سے پڑھ تو لیتا تھا

Vo mere dard ko ānkhoñ se paṛh to letā thā

He would read my pain from my eyes

مگر لبوں سے کبھی حال پُوچھتا نہ تھا

Magar laboñ se kabhī ḥāl pūchhtā na thā

But never asked about my state with his lips

کچھ اِس طرح سے بچھڑنے کا وقت آیا تھا

Kuchh is tarah se bichhaṛne kā vaqt āyā thā

The time to part came in such a way

کہ الوداع بھی کہنے کا اِختیار نہ تھا

Ki alvidā bhī kahne kā ikhtiyār na thā

That there was no power to even say goodbye

کبھی جو اُس کی ہنسی یاد آ کے رُلاتی ہے

Kabhī jo us kī hansī yād ā ke rulātī hai

When his laughter comes to mind and makes me cry

تو اپنی آنکھ سے چُپ چاپ اشک پونچھتا ہوں

To apnī āñkh se chup chāp ashk pūñchhtā hūñ

Then I silently wipe tears from my eyes

وہ ایک خواب تھا جس کو سجا نہ پائے ہم

Vo ek khvāb thā jis ko sajā na pāe ham

It was a dream that we couldn't adorn

میں آج تک اُسی خواب کی روشنی میں ہوں

Maiñ āj tak usī khvāb kī roshanī meñ hūñ

I am still in the light of that very dream

نہ اُس نے مجھ کو بُلایا، نہ میں صدا دے سکا

Na us ne mujh ko bulāyā, na maiñ sadā de sakā

Neither did he call me, nor could I call out

عجیب قِصّہ تھا، دونوں ہی بے زباں رہے

Ajīb qiṣṣah thā, donoñ hī be zabāñ rahe

It was a strange story, both remained voiceless

وہ ایک نام جو ہونٹوں پہ آ نہیں سکتا

Vo ek nām jo hoñṭoñ pe ā nahīñ saktā

That one name which cannot come to the lips

وہی تو نام ہے جو دِل سے جا نہیں سکتا

Vohī to nām hai jo dil se jā nahīñ saktā

That is the very name that cannot leave the heart

ہماری چاہتوں کا کوئی گواہ بھی نہ تھا

Hamārī chāhatoñ kā koī gavāh bhī na thā

There was no witness to our desires

مگر یہ دِل ہے کہ سب کچھ بُھلا نہیں سکتا

Magar ye dil hai ki sab kuchh bhulā nahīñ saktā

But this heart cannot forget anything

اگر کبھی تری تنہائی تجھ سے پوچھے گی

Agar kabhī tirī tanhāī tujh se pūchhegī

If ever your loneliness asks you

کہ کون تھا جو تجھے بے صدا چاہتا رہا

Ki kaun thā jo tujhe be ṣadā chāhtā rahā

Who was it that loved you silently

تو یاد کرنا کسی شام کی وہ خاموشی

To yād karnā kisī shām kī vo khāmoshī

Then remember that silence of an evening

کوئی تھا جو تجھے دیکھ کر مسکراتا رہا

Koī thā jo tujhe dekh kar muskurātā rahā

Someone was there who kept smiling looking at you

ہمیں مِلا ہی نہیں وہ مقام دُنیا میں

Hameñ milā hī nahīñ vo maqām duniyā meñ

We never found that place in the world

جہاں پہ دِل کی محبّت کو نام دے سکتے

Jahāñ pe dil kī muḥabbat ko nām de sakte

Where we could give a name to the heart's love

ہم اپنے خواب کی تعبیر ڈھونڈتے ہی رہے

Ham apne khvāb kī ta'bīr ḍhūñḍhte hī rahe

We kept searching for the interpretation of our dream

مگر وہ خواب کسی سے بیان کر نہ سکے

Magar vo khvāb kisī se bayān kar na sake

But we couldn't express that dream to anyone

اب اُس کے بعد کسی سے نظر نہیں ملتی

Ab us ke ba'd kisī se nazar nahīñ miltī

Now after him, my gaze doesn't meet anyone else's

کہ آنکھ آنکھ میں وہ داستان رہتی ہے

Ki āñkh āñkh meñ vo dāstān rahtī hai

Because that story remains in my eyes

وہ جا چکا ہے مگر اُس کی خامشی اب بھی

Vo jā chukā hai magar us kī khāmoshī ab bhī

He has left, but his silence still

مری ہر ایک دُعا کے دَرمِیان رہتی ہے

Mirī har ek du'ā ke darmiyān rahtī hai

Remains amidst my every prayer

نہ کوئی شِکوہ، نہ حسرت، نہ کوئی گِلہ اُس سے

Na koī shikvah, na ḥasrat, na koī gilah us se

No complaint, no longing, no grievance with him

بس ایک بات ہے جو دِل میں رہ گئی اب تک

Bas ek bāt hai jo dil meñ rah gaī ab tak

Just one thing remains in my heart till now

ہماری مُحَبَّت بے آواز تھی شاید

Hamārī muḥabbat be āvāz thī shāyad

Our love was voiceless, perhaps

اسی لیے تو زمانے کو سُنائی نہ دی

Isī liye to zamāne ko sunāī na dī

That's why it wasn't heard by the world

مَقْطَع — (آواز آہستہ آہستہ خاموش ہو جائے)

Maqṭa' — (Āvāz āhista āhista khāmosh ho jāe)

Maqta' — (Voice slowly fades into silence)

وہ میرا ہو کے بھی میرا کبھی نہیں ہو سکا

Vo merā ho ke bhī merā kabhī nahīñ ho sakā

He was mine, yet could never truly be mine

یہ کیسا عشق تھا، جس کا کوئی اِقرار نہ تھا

Ye kaisā ishq thā, jis kā koī iqrār na thā

What kind of love was this, that had no confession?

ہم ایک دُوسرے کے دِل میں عُمْر بھر تو رہے

Ham ek dūsre ke dil meñ umr bhar to rahe

We remained in each other's hearts for a lifetime

مگر ہماری مُحَبَّت کا کوئی نام نہ تھا...

Magar hamārī muḥabbat kā koī nām na thā...

But our love had no name...
